Winter, ade
Farewell, winter

Winter, ade!

Scheiden tut weh.

Aber dein Scheiden macht,

dass mir das Herze lacht.

Winter, ade!

Scheiden tut weh.

Winter, ade!

Scheiden tut weh.

Gerne vergess’ ich dein;

kannst immer ferne sein.

Winter, ade!

Scheiden tut weh.

Winter, ade!

Scheiden tut weh.

Gehst du nicht bald nach Haus’,

lacht dich der Kuckuck aus.

Winter, ade!

Scheiden tut weh.

Farewell, winter!

Parting hurts.

But your leaving

makes my heart laugh.

Farewell, winter!

Parting hurts.

Farewell, winter!

Parting hurts.

I’m happy to forget you;

you can always be afar.

Farewell, winter!

Parting hurts.

Farewell, winter!

Parting hurts.

If you don’t go back soon,

the cuckoo will laugh down on you.

Farewell, winter!

Parting hurts.

Originally, this melody was sung with lyrics entitled “Farewell, darling“. In 1835, Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics that are known today to the melody that already existed. The lyrics are about the parting with winter that – in contrast to other partings – is not painful at all.
