Yogisha
Night train

itsumo itsumo tôru yogisha

shizukana hibiki kikeba

tôimachio omoidasu

yaminonakani tsuzuku akari

yogishano madono akari

haruka haruka kieteyuku

Always, always, the night train passes by.

When I hear its faint sound,

I think of my distant town.

Its lights travel through the darkness.

The bright windows of the night train

slowly slip away into the distance.

This song is included in a fourth grade school book which was published in 1947. Later on, a real translation of the original German lyrics was included in school books, too. However, the post-war generation in general – just like me in particular – cannot imagine this song with different lyrics than the ones about the night train.
