The melody of this song was already sung in the early 19th century. Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics that are still known today. These lyrics were also included in the collection “50 nursery songs” which was published in 1843. Children like to sing this song mostly because of the onomatopoetic lyrics and the easy melody.
